10 more charged over review riots

By Judy Ogutu

Ten people, among them a former director of the National Convention Executive Council (NCEC), appeared in court following riots in Nairobi.

Koitamet ole Kina and Kepta Ombati were yesterday arraigned in court with other activists Evans Osego Owiti, Paul Ongera Alwenyi, Cyprian Orina Nyamwamu and Stephen Wairi Wainaina.

Also charged were Elkana Odembo, Spencer Ongonga Orio, Sheikh Ahmed Ramadhan and Keli Christant Musyoka.

They were accused of creating a disturbance by erecting barriers on City Hall Way, Nairobi, on Thursday.

Except Wainaina and Ongonga, the suspects were accused of refusing to allow two police officers to take their fingerprints at Inland Cargo Depot Police Station in Nairobi.

They denied the charges before Nairobi Chief Magistrate, Aggrey Muchelule, who granted each of them a bond of Sh50,000 with a surety of the same amount. Alternatively, they were granted a cash bail of Sh10,000.

In the courtroom, they complained of being mistreated by police, claims the prosecution dismissed as "wild".

Their lawyer, Mr Otiende Amollo, said they had told him they were mistreated while in custody and taken to an obscure police station.

"The cell where they spent a night is actually a godown," he said.

While there, some of them were not allowed to see their lawyers, relatives or be attended to by medical personnel, he said.

He claimed they were denied food and water against their constitutional rights.

The case was fixed for hearing on September 7.
